Stenosis means “narrowing”
where that narrowing occurs and the underlying issue(s) causing varies, and tends to cause very different symptoms
1. Where Is the stenosis (narrowing) occurring?
Is the narrowing in the central canal, which is the main passage containing the bundle of nerve roots in your lower back.
Is the narrowing in the lateral recess, the side area inside the canal where nerve roots travel before exiting.
Is the narrowing in the foramen, where a spinal nerve exits the spine.
You can have just one or a combination of the above
2. What’s the underlying issue causing the narrowing?
Several changes can crowd the nerves, such as one or some combination of:
Bulging or degenerated discs, loss of disc height.
Enlarged facet joints and bone spurs (called spondylosis or arthritis)
Ligaments that become thicker or buckle inward.
