Why did I choose Germany for my Disc replacement surgery?

My Disc Replacement Story 

In 2003, after suffering through 20 years of crippling back pain, I was literally begging my doctors for a lumbar fusion. I had given up almost every activity I loved and was running out of hope.

Then, early studies for artificial disc replacement (ADR) started making the news.

When I researched the domestic FDA trials, I ran into two massive walls:

  1. The Disc Replacement FDA trial was randomized: Meaning there was a 50% chance I would still wake up with a fusion.
  2. Out-of-pocket costs: Another non-random trial in LA was going to run me upwards of $60,000 out-of-pocket because US insurers treated disc replacement like an experimental gamble.

I refused to accept an irreversible fusion or a $60K gamble. So I looked outside the US system.

I connected with Stenum Hospital outside Bremen, Germany. Their orthopedic team had already completed hundreds of motion-preservation procedures using the Charité disc, led by surgeons who helped train on and develop the tech.

The kicker? The entire package, surgery, private hospital stay, pre-op workup, post-op complications coverage, and rehab, cost around 30K.

I flew from San Francisco to Bremen with my dad. Within 18 hours post-op, I declined the morphine pump, stood up, dropped the walker, and walked to the bathroom under my own power. By day 4, my dad and I were walking around Bremen.

Fast forward over two decades: I have spent the last 20+ years skiing black diamonds, golfing, and living completely hardware- and fusion-free.

Avoiding fusion took rejecting the default US surgical conveyor belt and doing the legwork on international motion preservation before letting anyone weld my spine together.
