Artificial Disc Replacement or Spinal Fusion?

In a spinal fusion surgery, the damaged disc is removed and a bone spacer is inserted in its place. A metal plate and screws are then placed at the front of the neck to hold the implant in place. The result is a segment that no longer moves, or is “fused”. HOWEVER, research studies have shown that fusions increase the chance of “adjacent segment disease”, where healthy discs above and below the fusion site experience increased stress and can then herniate requiring a subsequent surgery. An artificial disc replacement conversely, preserves NATURAL MOTION and lessens stress on other healthy discs, reducing the risk of a second surgery.
